So we were somewhat surprised to discover that a whole bunch of you guys are turning the convention on its head and snatching up the greater portion of Black Friday loot for yourselves! In fact, in a recent DealNews survey, 44% of respondents said they'd mostly be purchasing goods for themselves on Black Friday.

There's a serious gender gap when it comes to buying presents for yourself on Black Friday. While it's true that 44% of our poll respondents said they'd mostly be shopping for themselves on Black Friday, the number swelled to 51% more than half! when we just looked at answers from guys.

The ladies, on the other hand, were more likely to say they'd be shopping for others; 59% said they were shopping for children or relatives, as opposed to just 25% who will be buying mainly for themselves. That said, the men were also more likely to be shopping for a spouse: 15% of males said they were shopping for a significant other, as opposed to just 7% of females who said the same.

Age & Black Friday Shopping

Interestingly, those who are at the top of their own Black Friday gift list fell into two age brackets. Our younger (18 to 35) and older (55+) readers are looking out for number one, with 57% and 38% of respondents saying they'd be shopping for themselves, respectively. Middle-aged folks were feeling more charitable, with 33% saying they'd be shopping for their kids. Don't give them too much credit though; 31% of 36- to 54-year-olds said they'd be mostly shopping for themselves, so the children only came out on top in this age group by a razor-thin margin.

Hactivist collective Anonymous has decided enough is enough, and that it's time for Americans (and sympathetic others around the world) to stand up and reclaim their government from the clutches of corrupt politicians who espouse tyranny.The group announced that on Nov. 5, it will hold a "Million Mask March." They expect hundreds of thousands of participants to descend upon over 400 locations, including Washington, D.C., in an expression of solidarity against oppression and despotism.

Participants are encouraged, but not required, to don masks featuring the likeness of Guy Fawkes, who is known for his involvement in the Gunpowder Plot of 1605. Originally considered a symbol of treachery, popular culturerewrote his legacy as that of a hero fighting against unjust. Nov. 5 was designated Guy Fawkes Day. The 2006 film V for Vendetta popularized his visage, and Anonymous eventually appropriated this mask and the date for its own purposes.

The main event is scheduled to occur at the Washington National Monument, evoking memories of well-known gatherings such as the legendary March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, and countless other Million [insert noun here] Marches.

Exactly what Anonymous hopes to achieve through this march is unclear. However, the group is known for its decentralized and laissez-faire approach to organization, and this march may signal a shift towards a more clear, focused agenda. It will also serve as a litmus test, gauging the eagerness of Americans to commit to another Occupy Wall Street style movement.

Ultimately though, it's difficult to imagine the group scoring a clear victory with this march. While most Americans are fed up with the political antics that have caused an unending governmental stalemate, there is no acute impetus novel enough to rally around, as with the Great Recession and the Tea Party movement in 2009, or the global crescendo of political instability that lead to the Arab Spring and Occupy Wall Street movements.

Furthermore, even with the massive support, publicity, and dissemination of its objectives, Occupy Wall Street has all but disappeared, after failingto accomplish its major goals. Anonymous shares many of these goals, but has neither the momentum behind it, nor a real platform from which to combat the financial and political discrepancies plaguing the nation .

Still, if Anonymous is serious about revamping its approach and transforming into a more effective political action group, it has picked a uniquely millennial approach for doing so by creating a cultural mashup of a call to action. So as Guy Fawkes, V, or Anonymous might say, "Remember, remember, the 5th of November," and don't ever stop fighting for your inalienable rights. The status quo is betting that you will.

Calls start early on Guy Fawkes

Fire services were busy with Guy Fawkes celebrations last night.

South Canterbury fire service assistant area manager Steve Greenyer said the calls started coming in about 8pm.

Three fires were reported about the same time: a vegetation fire at Adair Settlement Rd at 8pm, a rubbish fire on Orbell St at 8.15 and a vegetation fire on Beaconsfield Rd Timaru about 8.20.

Crews were called out to two tussock fires at Caroline Bay near the car park on Virtue Ave at 9.25 and 11.40. A grass fire was reported at South St at 10.15.

A blaze was reported near Orari Station Rd at 10.15. Crews from Geraldine, Temuka and Pleasant Point attended the farm shed fire.

At 6.30am the Washdyke crew was called to a grass fire on Mahoneys Hill Rd.

Mr Greenyer said fire safety staff were investigating the Orari, Adair Settlement, and Beaconsfield fires this morning.None of them were suspicious at this time.

The rest were fireworks related, he said.

Meanwhile, the South Canterbury District Health Board reported a child had been taken to hospital with a burn to the hand. The patient was not admitted. No other injuries were reported.
